We found out that my little sister was having a baby really early on...like only 4 weeks along. So, to everyone (including her)...it felt like she was pregnant FOR.EV.ER. When Ian finally arrived (a week late) it was cause for great celebration...and a photo shoot.

Seriously, he is such a good baby...but at 8 days old he would not sleep for me. He kept a constant watch on the camera, inspecting it, analyzing it, storing away that information in his little baby brain. Regardless, we got some cute photos of the newest family member!

Ellison + Griffin: 1 Year Old

Joly Families: Anytime

One year ago I had the pleasure of photographing baby Jack and his lucky mom and dad as they just started out as a new family. A few weeks ago I was able to capture Jack again (as he turned 1) as well as his cousins and family visiting from Canada.

This is one of my favorite images from that morning. Everyone's eyes were so focused on the camera and the way that Jack was playing with his cousin's hair. So cute!

This week's iheartfaces photo challenge is entitled: Slice of Life. To me, this image certainly captures what an everyday moment in life can be. Last week, one of my great friends needed a babysitter for her twins and I gladly volunteered my help. This little guy was just exploring all the toys in his play area, maybe wondering why he wasn't at daycare, certainly interested in the big camera focused on him. But in the end, he went about the business of a 1 year old: playing, eating, sleeping, living the good life.

Since it's Thursday. Since Winter is back and I don't know what coat to wear. Since I have a lot on my mind. Here is a list...a list of lovely things.

I have a new nephew...he's 2 days old and I'm in love. Pictures soon!!

I can't get this song out of my head...and this is my favorite version. Love it EVERY.TIME.

This photo is killing me...and I wouldn't mind owning the hat either. I'm a sucker for a silly hat.

Netflix streaming on my ipad is AWE.SOME. Watched Kings of Pastry last night in bed. Yes I did. What should I watch next? I'm thinking this.

Made these for dinner last night. Yum. (tuna, tartar sauce, and green onion options)

I have a date with my hubby tonight. Dinner and a movie! Must use our Groupon before it expires (today!!)

Looking forward to seeing him live this summer. 3 times. (looking forward to is a gross understatement)

I'm trying to learn Twitter. Am I the only one who is confused? Who should I follow?

If we ever have kids I'm going to aim for a Fall birthday. All of my 8 nieces/nephews were born between Feb 27th and May 21st. Even weirder 2 of them share a birthday (9 years apart), 2 are only 1 day apart (the same year), and 2 are 2 days apart (4 years between them). Does this happen in anyone else's family?

Maija, Pete + Jana: Siblings

Not 1 or 2...but 3 of the most adorable kids on the planet live next door to us. And if you've read this blog before, you've probably seen their pictures 1 or a few times. Last summer...a snowy winter day...I'm already trying to make them sign a contract for senior and wedding photos on these kids :)

First is Maija. Creative, kind, and always helpful. She always has a wave and "hi" for us over the fence.

Then there's Pete. Engergetic and playful...he likes to say that George (my husband) is his best friend.

The newest member is Jana. Sweet, dear, and always happy. She's the perfect addition to the family of (now) 5.

Adam + Wes: Brothers

Photographing children in general can be quite the test of patience and stamina. Photographing 2 brothers is a whole 'nother ballgame. They are little balls of energy bouncing from couch to floor, hiding from the camera, messing with their clothes, tackling, screaming, you name it. These brothers were all boy and it took them a while to warm up to me (and the camera). By the end of our session the boys were worn out, I was sweaty and tired, but the photos made it all worth it. Adam + Wes, I'd gladly chase you around the studio any day!

Snow Day

For weeks my neighbor and I have been planning to get photos of her kids during a snowy day. I only stepped outside for about 10 minutes because I was worried about the snow falling on the camera (I had it in a plastic bag) and the inner mechanics of the camera freezing. I don't actually know if that is such a thing, but I wasn't taking any chances.

Don't be fooled by the sun and the green grass and short sleeves in these photos...I'd say I'm a little behind in posting some photos. I'm currently staring out the window at the snow that has been falling for 2 days.

These adorable faces are cousins that grandma brought to get their photos together. I'd say they had a good time running around the park while occasionally stopping for a photo or two. I've taken the girls photos a couple of other times...see here and here.

Ten on Tuesday: January 11

Hey guys...I'm doing it! Week 2 and I have not given up yet!! Here is this week's Ten on Tuesday!

1. Is there a band/artist that you hate? Wow, hate...that is pretty extreme. I definitely don't like some bands or types of music but I don't know about hate. The list could end up being quite long, I'm sure, but let's just pick one...how about Justin Beiber. I just don't get it. Oh, I'm not 13 either...maybe that is why.

2. What do you do when you get a gift that you don't like? I guess I'm too polite to do anything other than look pleased and say thank you. I do have myself on home video at age 5 opening a gift of barrettes for my birthday. Let's just say that my look of disgust was not brief and it was followed up by something along the lines of "I didn't ask for these". I'm ashamed at my 5 year old self.

3. How is your work office/cubicle decorated? Is messy a decoration? If I could clean up the clutter (which is mostly scraps of paper with notes scribbled on them) it would be quite nice. Mood board, pretty calendar, a few photos, printer, computer, etc.

4. Do you use all of your vacation every year? I'm fortunate to be self-employed so vacation time is hard to define. Everyday is like a vacation (where I can define my own schedule) but the kind of vacation where you end up taking your laptop (so you can work the whole time).

5. Do you have a real or fake Christmas tree? Real all the way. It is still proudly standing in the living room glowing in all of it's Fraser Fir glory. I've taken everything down but the tree...I love it so. *see above photo for proof

6. If you could have anything for dinner tonight, what would it be? Pasta Salvi from Salvi's Bistro. If you live in Central Ohio and have not been there, go tonight. You can thank me later for introducing you to what I like to call "Heaven On A Plate".

7. Do you bite your fingernails? yes.

8. How many cups of coffee do you drink each day? zero cups of coffee

9. Do you have a nervous tick? No, no nervous tick. (gosh I'm boring...no coffee, no nervous tick)

10. How often do you vacuum? I have exactly 2 rugs in my house, so the vacuum doesn't get utilized a whole lot. I do sweep with the broom quite often though. Every other day I'd say.

A Christmas Photobooth

In mid-December, G and I hosted a "Winter Beer Tasting" Party. I provide the yummy treats, you bring your favorite seasonal brew. Fun, fun, fun I tell ya. We shared beers, we had blind taste tests, we even had a photobooth!! Amazing amounts of fun. All I did was set up a little background in the basement, set out some props, put the camera on the tripod, and let everyone shoot away with my new wireless remote shutter. Here are some of my favorites from the night.

Ten on Tuesday: January 4

I was first introduced to the idea of Ten on Tuesday through Gail Werner's blog, which led me to Roots and Rings...where the questions originate. I'd like to participate so that I can share a bit more about myself to all of you. Problem is...it is super hard for me to stick with things like this...but I'm going to try. Hold me accountable people!!

1. What kind of home do you currently reside in? My husband and I currently reside in a home that we own. It was built in 1923 and is your typical four square style home. We purchased the home in April of 2008, only 15 days after walking through it for the first time. We started renovating in June of 2008 and were able to finally move in in September 2009. We are currently building a screened in porch in the back and finishing the basement. Some before and afters can be seen here, here, here, and here. So, I never did finish showing the house...see what I mean about sticking with things. My mind is on to something else...all. the. time.

2. If you could completely redecorate one room in your house, which room would you pick and why. What would you do to it? As I mentioned in the previous answer, our house was just recently renovated from top to bottom (mostly), so everything is pretty much how I want it to be. One area of the house that we hope to get to in the future though, is the attic. It is a 1/2 story with a pretty good amount of headroom and space. If I had the funds, I would finish this room and make it a new office for myself, or maybe a library, or a master bedroom. So many options with a bare-bones room.

3. What is your favorite place to gain inspiration for your home decor style? I find inspiration in stores such as Pottery Barn, Restoration Hardware, Crate and Barrel, and CB2. I get inspired by these stores and then try do copy their styles on the cheap.

4. What is your favorite piece of home decor? Right now it is our Christmas Tree. I don't want to take it down :( The rest of the year, it is our collection of art...Kentucky Derby Poster above the fireplace, Ray LaMontagne poster from Red Rocks, etc.

5. What do you want visitors to feel when they visit your home? Warm, cozy, and welcome.

6. Describe your home in one word and explain why you chose that word. Lovely... because a lot of hard word went into making this house a home...and I love it.

7. What are some predominate colors or patterns in your home? dark brown, khaki, grey, blue.

8. What is your favorite room in your house and why? I love the living room because it is relaxing and cozy. I think I'll love the screened in porch the most in the summer for dining and entertaining friends.

9. Do you take a hands on or DIY approach to projects around your home or do you enlist or hire help. We are almost 100% DIY. When renovating our house from June 2008-September 2009, we only hired a handful of help. (HVAC rerouting in the basement, connecting the gas line to the new stove in the kitchen, and installing a new electricity box in the basement) Husband and I did the rest with our own two hands.

10. Where is your favorite place to shop for home furnishings? Ikea is the current leader.

One of my favorite locations to shoot in Central Ohio is Inniswoods Metro Park. It is gorgeous, green, huge, lovely, and crawling with tons of other photographers on any given day. You've got to either go during the week or get there early on the weekends to avoid the rush of cameras click, click, clicking all around you. Luckily, my cousin and her family were able to meet me during the week to capture some photos of her family, and especially Anna, who just turned 6 months old. See her newborn photos here.

My Monday Morning Thoughts

*It has been busy at the household this morning. Our new bed was delivered, our neighbor came over to borrow a tool, the phone has been ringing off the hook, and we had to make an emergency trip to Target for laundry detergent.

*We won a bed (back in July) that was finally delivered today. The box spring won't fit up the stairs so it is currently leaning against the side of the house. Here's how we won it!

*I did a 3 month old photo session yesterday. That was sorta hard.

*I just finished reading Redeeming Love and loved it. I'm currently reading I'd Know You Anywhere and wish I could finish it faster. Up next is Beginner's Greek which I randomly picked up at the library.

*My husband went to The Breeder's Cup on Saturday. Poor Zenyatta :(

*Someone called for my husband this morning. I answered. The man asked if he could speak to my FATHER!!

*I should be editing photos. Goodbye.

Proof of the freak hailstorm!

Mitchell: 8 months old

Sometimes an out of the ordinary event will occur that will cause the universe around you to spiral out of control and nothing will ever be the same again. (yes, that was unnecessarily dramatic)

In the case of Mitchell's 8 month old photo session, that out of the ordinary event was a freak hailstorm. We were minding our own business...taking photos...deciding to move to the back yard for a change of scenery. Bam...we walk out the back door with a 5 month old, an 8 month old, a 4 year old, 2 adults, and 1 very expensive camera...and it starts to hail/rain/wreak havoc.

We were totally stuck on the porch under the awning...getting wet :( So, change of clothes and back inside for some more shots.

Alls well that ends well though...and I think we still got some great pictures of Mitchell at 8 months.

Evalynn: 6 months

I've known little E's mom for almost 15 years...which doesn't seem possible. It's been so amazing to thing back to those first days when we were heading into college, to now, seeing her as a wife and mother.

We've had countless adventures together...from stalking certain members of NSync to taking her engagement photos (before I really knew how to use my camera). Getting photos of her beautiful blue-eye babe is just another chapter in our story.

TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF: Hello - My name is Kerri Mackey; I am the creator of Louie's Hardware. I make jewelry from copper, brass and beads. My day job is as an architect for a commercial architectural firm. Although my job requires a great deal of creativity; I still crave an outlet for my own designs and ideas. I also just love making things! I come from a very crafty family. My mom can sew anything and she's a wonderful cake decorator - she made my wedding cake! My dad is a jack of all trades, plus he's very good at instructing. My younger brother does some amazing woodworking. My husband and I are expecting our first child and he made us the most beautiful toy chest And finally; my older brother is in culinary school; he makes some really delicious dishes. So I think the crafty gene was passed down.

WHAT IS YOUR SHOP AND WHAT DO YOU SELL: My shop is Louie's Hardware. I sell jewelry - most is made from hammered or brushed copper or brass. I also work with some semi precious stones and pearls. I've also started creating collage art which are mounted on wood boards. I really like doing both even though they are so different.

HOW DO YOU PROMOTE/MARKET YOUR SHOP: I promote primarily with Facebook. I have a fan page. I also like to do give aways at local events - silent auctions, swag bags, charity events, etc. Plus, family and friends wear my jewelry and tell people about it.

WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST SHOP GOAL IN THE NEXT 6 MONTHS: I guess I have two biggest goals - one is to create more pieces to add to my shop. Especially the metal pieces as well as more collage art. The other goal is to be more consistent about my Facebook posting in order to draw more fans.

TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF: My name is Karen Buoncristiano, I am 34 years old, and I have always enjoyed making things myself and crafting. I am married to a great guy who is very supportive of my crafty goals, and he is also crafty himself, from learning to throw pottery on the wheel to designing and creating mosaic tables. I suppose we have lived in Ohio for about five years. Before that, I have lived all over, but mostly in Annapolis, Maryland. I really love Ohio and the people here are so friendly and charismatic. I have been taking ceramics classes here at the Columbus Cultural Arts Center for about four years. If anyone is interested in trying their hand at making pottery on the potter's wheel (or any other art form), I highly recommend the Cultural Arts Center. In fact, I still take classes there to this day and I hope to never stop taking ceramics classes there! It is a great place and very welcoming for new artists and for people who are just starting to try pottery or any other art form offered there. Lastly, I do have a full time job, too, besides my Crafty By Nature Studio endeavors. I work for the gas company doing Geographic Information Systems (GIS) which is basically computer mapping of gas lines and much more. I do cherish my crafting time because I enjoy it so much when I am making something wonderful and natural and useful for people to use! Crafting and pottery keeps me going, and really lights my fire!

WHAT IS YOUR SHOP AND WHAT DO YOU SELL: Crafty By Nature Studio is my shop. I try to keep everything sold by Crafty By Nature Studio as ecological or earthy as possible. I think the theme of my shop is right in the name, because I handcraft nature-inspired crafts, crafts that use all natural ingredients, and I recycle as much as possible including my clay. Crafty By Nature Studio sells a variety of all natural body care products, handmade pottery, and nature themed arts and gifts. Right now, the focus is on the all natural body care products including Healthy Skin Body Butter, Working Hands Skin Repair, relaxing bath salts in two scents (Relaxing Lavender and Breathe Better Mint), luxurious Eco-Lovely Lip Balms available in two savory flavors (Vanilla or Mint), the sensuous Eco-Lovely Lotion Bars, and aromatherapy candles for ambiance. Pottery has been ranging from bowls to mugs to goblets lately. Nature inspired art gifts currently underway are the cute "peanut hummingbirds". I created hummingbird ornaments using a peanut and a toothpick for the beak, then painted them to look like ruby throated hummingbirds and added wings. They're really cute!

HOW DO YOU PROMOTE/MARKET YOUR SHOP: I am on Etsy of course and I have links on Facebook. I have recently started a blog and that has been a lot of fun. Occasionally, I send crafty emails to friends and ask them to pass them along. I haven't tried twitter as of yet and I am not sure if I am missing out or not. I do also have my own website, which I have made several sales off of already. Sometimes, word of mouth is helping me to get business and then I can just tell people, "Go to www.craftybynaturestudio.com and you can buy your body butters, hand creams, pottery, or lip balms right then and there"

WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST SHOP GOAL IN THE NEXT 6 MONTHS: My biggest shop goal in the next six months is twofold. First, I aspire to survive and learn from my very first crafty show, which is the two day Grove City Fall Arts and Crafts Bazaar held on Saturday, November 13th (9am-4pm) and Sunday, November 14th (10am-4pm). I am so excited for my first show ever! I want to learn as much as I can from it, and my second goal for the next six months is about more shows. I plan and hope to get into more shows and gain more exposure and more learning. I already have figured out that part of making goals happen means that I just be more vigilant on keeping track of the calendar for when the shows are held and also for when the application deadlines are for applying to be included in a given show. Sometimes I say "Get it together, Karen, and use a calendar!"

5 THINGS THAT MAKE YOU HAPPY: Just about anything purple, my whippet dog, crafting, throwing on the potter's wheel, and of course my crafty, very handsome husband is apprenticing with me to be a potter too (and he's learning quick!).

Cat Socks

Many years ago, probably in my Christmas stocking or Easter basket, my mom gave me a pair of cat socks. Not socks you put on cats, but socks that you put on me...with cats on them. Know what I mean. The cat design is not just printed...but embroidered (I guess that is what it would be...the cat designs are actually stitched with thread onto the sock) Man, I'm making this sound so difficult. Just see above photo if you are confused.

Anyway...I still have the socks and I love the socks because of the cats (for one thing) and also because they are ankle socks (so know one knows the cats are there when I wear them to the gym).

I also love them (and this is my favorite part) because after I take them off, I have cats imprinted onto my feet for a while. It surprises me and makes me smile every time.

Mitchell: 4 months old

I was on the road by myself with the windows down and the music up. It was a beautiful day and I was enjoying the sound of my voice singing at the top of my lungs. I had 2 hours of a drive ahead of me and it was going to be totally worth it to meet Mitchell for the first time.

Mitchell really held it together for the whole 2 hour shoot, a multitude of poses, outfit changes, and even a viking helmet and beard appearance. After those 2 hours though, he was toast. I guess it's not easy being cute.

All in all, Mitchell is a cool kid, with a cool mom, and a cool room. Just see for yourself.

Our House: Curb Appeal

While the inside of our house has been a total work in progress since the summer of 2008, the curb appeal has been pretty much neglected. Sure, we've done a few things to spiffy up the look including tearing out some terrible looking trees, getting new windows, painting the door, and occasionally watering the grass. Oh, and we mulched too.

I guess it looks a bit better from where we started, but most days I feel like I should be on an episode of Curb Appeal, or Desperate Landscapes, or Yard Crashers. Hello...is anyone in TV land listening? I need your help.

Some days I joke with my husband that I'm going to spend the day at Lowe's or Home Depot until I spot and bring home Ahmed Hassan. He knows I'm not joking either.

Anna + Lillian: Sisters

I have a confession to make. I've never gotten a pedicure (or a manicure for that matter) and the last time I painted my toenails was for my wedding 3 years ago. This seems sort of weird to say, but it is not something that I even think about...until last Friday.

I was at the gym on the treadmill, which conveniently overlooks a Target. I decided right then and there on mile 2 that I needed to paint my toes a fun color for a while this summer. 15 minutes later I was trolling the cosmetics aisles looking for the most economically priced polish that I could find.

Low and behold, SINFUL COLORS: PROFESSIONAL ended up in my basket and eventually on my toes. One foot was purple, the other blue. When the husband came home I asked him which one he liked better. I think his reply was non-committal and sounded a bit like "Ummm, wow, interesting."

No worries, I chose on my own and decided on the blue. The purple was not vibrant enough for this experiment and sort of looked like a sparkly princess polish. So, blue it was.

And here I am admiring my blue toes while kayaking.

Tell me, can a woman over 30 (barely) wear bright blue polish in the summer?

All I needed were some letters, some felt, some fabric and thread. All the fabric that I used came from my favorite neighborhood store.

Photographing infants...what is better than capturing the first days of someones life. Not much I would say. Meet Jack-my 3rd Jack this year! Fresh and new to the world at only 7 days old. He was charming, adorable, and loved keeping his eyes on the camera...following me as I moved.

One thing I love about newborn shoots is setting the baby on it's belly for some tummy time photos. Every so often this new little person will lift up their head in an amazing feat of strength. It always delights the parents and me.

Our Garden: What a Difference a Year Makes

A lot has been happening in our garden since this time last year. First, let's take a look back at how it looked in May of 2009.

Here we have the side of our garage. I had to plant some things in order to divert the eyes away from the peeling, chipping paint. Did it work? No...well a new garage is not in the budget right now...so look at the pretty flowers.

Next up is the beginnings of our garden right after planting in May of last year. Notice the scraggly little grapevine in the back and the dirt pile to the left. It's not beautiful...I know this.

This was taken only a month later in June of 2009. The grapevine is perking up and the garden must have taken steroids while I was in California on vacation. It ended up being a very bountiful garden with peas, green beans, tomatoes, broccoli, cucumbers, carrots, squash, zucchini, peppers, and massive amounts of weeds. Scary amounts...I almost shudder when I look at this photo and remember.

Flash forward to May of 2010. I knew that I would not survive another summer with that type of garden. I wanted something functional and beautiful...and I hope we've pulled that off. First we made beds using a lot of the old brick we had laying around from removing a chimney. We laid them out into 6 beds, each measuring 4 x 8 feet.

Then around the beds we laid almost 3000 lbs of pea gravel for walking paths. And holy cow, do you see the grapevine!! We are going to have some serious grapes this year!!

The addition of a nice little bistro table at the back makes for a relaxing spot to enjoy the morning newspaper.

Did you plant a garden this year? I'd love to see some different layouts.

I was so excited when Jack's mom called me FROM THE HOSPITAL to schedule a newborn shoot for this little guy. I arrived at their house when he was just 5 days old to meet this handsome, head full of hair, little boy.

From the moment I arrived he was full-on crying and would only be consoled in the arms of mom or dad (I'm sure they didn't mind though). I still think I did a pretty good job of capturing some moments in between fits of crying. :)

Why I Can't Use The Ram Stamp

I've got a little thing for stamps. I don't collect or hoard them but I do enjoy getting a nice fresh book on occasion. I also like when I get to the last one and get to throw away the leftover paper. Weird.

Anyway, I have one stamp that I just cannot get rid of. Here is a story about this lonely little ram stamp. My husband and I were married in August of 2007...a destination wedding in Maine. As it came time to send out the invitations the post office was again raising it's rates. Because we were sending these out at an awkward time, (according to the post office rate changing world) we could no longer purchase the previous wedding themed stamps because the postage was not enough and the next wedding themed stamps had not been released yet. Please keep in mind that my then-boyfriend was sent out on the stamp mission and I did not find any of this out until he returned home with the stamps. So, I came home from work on stamp retrieval day to find that my ingenious boyfriend had solved the stamp crisis. We would put two stamps on the invitation to arrive at the needed rate....and one of them would be a ram stamp. I honestly don't remember my reaction. It could have been bad, but probably not...I'm nothing if not laid-back and go-with-the-flow. The point is...I cannot not let go of this stamp and so it will forever remain in my collection.

Too bad they didn't have moose stamps...it would have made more sense.

Basement Renovation: Week 7

I must not have taken many pictures last week of our progress, but I promise that things were happening.

and it all dealt with making sure NO.WATER.WILL.EVER.SEEP.INTO.THE.FLOORS.OR.WALLS.

This was some serious business that ended with painting a sealer onto the floors.

We are ready for some springtime rains to check out whether it will work or not.

Handmade/Homemade Challenge: Nephew's Birthday

For my nephew's 4th birthday, we have given the gift of our time and the experience of live theatre. Last night we took him to a production at a children's theatre of Robin Hood. In my opinion, the story line and dialogue were a little too mature for a children's theatre and the script included a lot of things that would go over the head of anyone younger than 13 or 14. Luckily they also threw in some scenes where the actors ran around the stage wildly yelling and screaming. This brought the attention of the 4-10 year olds back for a few minutes at least.

After the show the kids were invited to get their playbills signed by the actors, which I thought was a very nice touch. All the kids were super psyched to meet them. This is my nephew meeting Prince John.

Overall, the gift was a success and we all had a great time. When we dropped him off at home he said, "If you ever have any extra theatre tickets, you can come and see me." I take that as a good sign.

Spring into health

As a result of almost 2 years of home renovations, my health has fallen by the wayside. It's time to put it back on the top of my daily list. So, I've got the gym membership and the at home equipment as well.

Basement Renovation: Week 6

Sorry to keep you all in suspense over the state of the basement for the past month. Construction had to stop for a while, hubby had some work at his sister's house to do. But...now we are back in business and a lot has happened over the past week. I'll keep the narrative short and leave it up to the pictures to tell the story.

Walls were re-pointed and re-mortared.

A look at the walls at the beginning of the week.

Walls got a thin layer of cement to assure there would be no leaking. (water has never been an issue, this is just a precaution)

HVAC was re-routed and streamlined to maximize headroom.

Walls then got a coat of ThoroSeal to further ensure maximum waterproof-ness. We're not taking any chances!

Husband then melted away from pure exhaustion.

Back in the basement

It's been 2 1/2 years since the wedding and still one of my favorite details from the day is our guest book. I compiled a bunch of photos from our relationship and made a book with the help of Shutterfly.

Friends and family signed the book throughout the reception and at the bbq the following day.

My favorite page will always be the one with the little note left by my 6 year old niece.

It reads, "I have lost my tooth at your wedding day. Lauren"

February Freebie Photo Shoot

At the beginning of the year I posted on my Facebook page an opportunity for my friends. Once a month freebie photo shoot. No strings attached. J was the 2nd one to answer my call. Therefore she got February. (to see photos from January's shoot, click here)

The day was cold and I was not heading outside for picture taking. It wasn't going to happen. That made me nervous though. I'm just learning about this camera of mine and the thing (the camera) likes natural light (might want to check into getting it some Vitamin D pills). So, inside we stayed...but close to the windows and the light, mind you.

J is such a good friend and J is expecting TWINS any day now (as of today, not the photo shoot day). I'm so very excited for she and B to welcome a baby boy and a baby girl into their lives.

Handmade/Homemade Challenge: Brother-in-law's Birthday

I have no real reason for my absence from this blog. I got lazy. So, I'm going to forget it ever happened and never speak of it again. (and I'll try to be better from now on).

So, in February my brother-in-law had a birthday. It sort of snuck up on me so there was no time to make anything or search Etsy for the perfect gift. The morning of the party, hubby and I went down to a local bakery to pick up some treats for the birthday boy (man).

This brother-n-law of mine is known for his avoidance of carbs...so what do we get him...fancy bread and olive oil. Weird? Maybe. But this guy also loves to indulge in a Saturday morning of homemade french toast once in a while and this is the perfect bread for that.

The moral of the story is this...next time your carb hating brother-in-law has a birthday...get him some bread.

Traveling Books

I'm reading a book right now that I borrowed from my sister-in-law. She borrowed it from her mother-in-law who lives in Annapolis. Her name is in the front cover so that it can be returned to her when it is finished traveling.

It made me think about, and miss, the old cards that were in the backs of books when you checked them out of the library. The librarian would stamp it with the date and you would sign your name on the line. I used to love to see who had the books before me in elementary school.

I might buy some little cards like this to put in my books if they are going traveling. I can see where it has been once it returns to me. Does anyone else do this?

Oh, and are you wondering what is going on in the basement?

This gift was for my great friend, Julie who is expecting twins in T-minus 6 weeks from now. I only got a photo of one of the gifts (modeled by my lovely 5 day old neighbor) but I assure you there were two of these. One for each babe.

Inspiration struck the day before her baby shower (nothing like the last minute) when I was browsing my local fabric store and came across this book. I knew what had to be done. I got the fabric, I got the book, and I started sewing.

I only finished one (green and white dots) before heading to the shower.

Then I think I broke my sewing machine (still undecided) and had to borrow my mom's machine to finish the second one.

I can't wait to try out some other projects from the book.

So this gift is for my oldest sister. 2 years ago I made calendars for my whole family for Christmas. I just found out recently that my oldest sister loved hers so much that it still hangs on the wall - even though outdated. So that is where the inspiration came from for this gift.

I had the calendar start in February since her birthday is in late January. I wanted her to get the full years worth of calendar joy.

I went back and forth on this gift a bit. It's handmade/homemade right? I didn't print it obviously, but I did put all the pictures and dates in. I'm counting it.

HOW DO YOU PROMOTE YOUR SHOP: Through Twitter and Facebook mostly...I've tried blogging but every time I set myself up to write an entry, I can't think of anything to write about. I am determined to get one up and going by summer though.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE ITEM IN YOUR SHOP: Ohh, that is tough. I love, love, love my Joe candles - they are White Tea and Ginger and smell so refreshing. I also love my Beau candles - which are Pink Grapefruit and Ginger and oh-so-fine! I also really dig my Xavier candles - which are Chocolate Milk and so many people are surprised when they burn them because they fall in love with the scent, it isn't really what you would expect at all. Kind of hard for me to pick one favorite item.

WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST SHOP GOAL IN THE NEXT SIX MONTHS: I'd like to get my blog going and I'd like to have 50 sales through Etsy...baby steps...

FAVORITES (books, movies, music, etc.): I am sort of all over the place on all of these categories. As far as books go, I love Nelson Demille, and if you haven't read him, you should, he's very witty. I also like Tom Wolfe, John Grisham...and I can't help but love girly books like the Shopaholic books and anything else by Sophia Kinsella and most others that have a bright, colorful cover as I am walking through the library...yeah, sometimes I judge a book by it's cover. As far as movies go, I like so many...but some of my favorites are A Bronx Tale, American History X, Love Actually, Pretty Woman, Gran Turino, and The Hangover. Oh, and I just saw 500 Days of Summer and really enjoyed it. Okay...and music, I am all over the board on this one. I love Billy Joel, Elton John, Ben Folds, David Gray, Ben Harper, Jason Mraz, Kevin Devine, Matt Pond PA, Ben Lee, Ben Kweller, Kenny Chesney, Patsy Cline, George Strait, George Jones, Conway Twitty, Eric Clapton, Huffamoose, and anything my brother plays.

Basement Renovation: Week 5

This week was not so exciting for the basement. No major changes were made. But necessary things happened. Even if they were boring.

We had to call in the big guns for this project. The electric company. An electrician. An inspector. The electric company...again.

This week we moved our electric meter box around the corner of the house. This is important because we'd like to build a porch on, and it would have been in a bad location if it was not moved.

So the electric company came and shut off the power to the house. What's a girl to do with no power. I took a nap.

Here is the old meter in the old location.

Ladders were climbed. Wires were moved.

Here is the new box prior to the electric company coming back. It is in it's new location. You can sort of see where it used to be in the left part of the photo.

And to go with the new meter box, we got a new electric panel in the basement as well. It has been updated from a 100 amp to 200 amp so we have more circuits to work with. Our old box was mighty full. This work was done by a certified electrician. It looks so nice and neat now.

Finally, after nearly 12 hours without power the electric company finally came back to restore power. Our house got down to 50 degrees and everyone was a bit grumpy.

By the way, don't you hate it when you know the power is out and you still try to turn on lights or run the microwave. Am I the only one who does this?

The New CW Star

Yesterday I had the pleasure of assisting at a photo shoot with friend and photographer, Chris Keels. He was taking some promotional photos for Columbus' new CW Star, Annie.

Working with Annie and the whole experience in general was a great way to spend the afternoon.

I can't wait for another day in the studio and to see the images up around Columbus.

January Freebie Photo Shoot

One of my goals for 2010 is to take more photos. Better photos. I need the practice. I want crisp, clean images that I can be proud of and that people will enjoy seeing.

At the beginning of January I posted a proposition on my facebook page. Send me a message if you want a freebie photo shoot. I'll get practice...you'll get a facebook photo album. I got several interested friends within minutes.

This past Saturday I met up with my first freebie shoot "customers". It was a cold and foggy Ohio morning with a beautiful couple who loves their little 9 month old.

So...tell me what you think. Any comments/suggestions for a relative newbie.

Help At The Grocery Store

I've got a routine down. I plan out a weekly menu each Sunday evening and plan to cook 4 out of 7 days. The other 3 days I figure we'll eat leftovers, go to someones house, or eat out.

Then, I do my grocery shopping on Monday. If I plan correctly, I won't have to go back to the store the rest of the week. (That has not happened yet)

I do not like going to the grocery store without a list, and I prefer to have it broken down by sections in the store. That is where THE ULTIMATEST GROCERY LIST comes in handy. Print it out, check off what you need, and you are on your way.

Basement Renovation: Week 4

Wow! I can't believe it has been 4 weeks of work already. You just don't always realize how long things take and all the little things really do add up. Nothing is ever simple in home renovations.

This week we had access to a neighbors power washer and put it to good use. Those old basement walls were in need of a good cleaning. It also got rid of the mortar that was crumbly and would need replaced.

It only took a day to power wash the whole basement, so the next few days were spent closing up 2 windows on the back wall. These windows would have been in the future laundry room but we closed them up for several reasons.
1. There is no shortage of windows in this basement. We are still left with 7 down there.
2. We'd rather have the wall space for storage in the laundry room
3. These windows will eventually be underneath a screened in porch, therefore covered up anyway.

Husband is not a bricklayer by profession. Heck, he's never even done a job like this before. He made some calls, did some research and felt ready to tackle it regardless.

In the end, I think it looks great. The outside brick all matches up and the inside will be covered with drywall, so I think this is a win!

Next week...we're working on electrical.

Strange Things

Sometimes the husband does strange things.

I'm working away on the computer in the office.

I head downstairs to grab a glass of water.

This is what I find in the living room.

By the way, my house looks a little sad without Christmas decorations.

And I need a rug for this room.

And I wish that "someone" would close the cabinet doors when they are done.

And we don't normally keep a pillow in a tray on the coffee table. Only on special occasions.

Basement Renovation: Week 3

Week 3 of our basement renovation has arrived. As you can recall from Week 2, a royal dusty mess was made. The dust has now settled and what we are left with is a gaping hole in the floor.

New pipes will go into those gaping holes that will allow us to connect a new sink!! toilet!! and shower!! in our brand new basement bathroom. Awesome!

While the hubby was getting all the pipes situated in their proper locations, I was shoveling many pounds of rocks into the basement via the basement windows. 1200 pounds of rocks. Yeah, I'm strong.

Once the pipes were down, the rocks went on top, on the sides, and all around.

While the rocks settled, we rented a cement mixer from Home Depot and got busy mixing bag after bag of cement. Look how quickly hubby works...he's just a blur.

Hubs mixed and then threw shovelfuls of cement into the pits. I did the business of leveling things out and it went pretty well. A couple of spots will need sanded smooth once everything hardens up. We even wrote our names in the cement for future homeowners to see.

Up next, power washing the walls!

Handmade/Homemade Challenge: Sister-in-law's Birthday

One of my goals for Twenty-Ten is to buy handmade or make homemade gifts for birthdays and such. I plan to utilize Etsy as much as possible and also try my hand at more sewing/crafting/etc.

My first opportunity was yesterday for my sister in law's birthday. I went with Koukla Mou Designs on Etsy for some super cute and dainty fresh water pearl earrings. They are beautiful, wrapped up ready to gift, and shipped super fast.

Up next in January, a baby shower (for twins) and my sister's birthday.

Basement Renovation: Week 2

Week 2 of the basement renovation has come and gone. Know what else is gone...the wood paneled walls in the basement. Hip Hip Hurray! After that a couple of punks made a big dusty mess of the place while bringing up some of the concrete floor.

Big holes in the floor means access to the pipes. We're taking that nasty toilet stall out and installing a brand spankin' new full bathroom in the basement. It won't be in the same corner, so new pipes were called for.

In this corner will be a lovely laundry room. The toilet will be gone, the windows bricked up, the sink moved to the other side of the room, the giant hole filled with beautiful new concrete. I can't wait.

Over where cute husband is standing (on the right) will be the location for the new bathroom. Next up, we'll fill those big ugly holes with new rocks and concrete and power wash the heck out of those grungy walls.

Tonight I had to scan a photo of husband's grandma for a project that I'm working on so I swiped a nice one in a frame from my in-laws house.

Check out the picture behind it. Classic 1989.

Looks like my sister everyday of her senior year.

I might start keeping those photos in the frames when I buy new ones.

They are like time capsules!!

Basement Renovation: Week 1

I can't believe we are doing this. We just finished the first 2 floors. We still have construction dust floating in the air and boxes that are not unpacked. But, we are doing it. Basement. Renovation.

We have a really nice sized unfinished attic space as well. I would have liked to finish that first. My mom thinks we should finish the attic first. The construction dude (husband) says the basement is first. Something about needing a laundry room. He's tired of the laundromat. The attic will have to wait.

This is a pretty big basement, maybe 800 square feet. Not a small job we are getting ourselves into. We'll have another full bathroom, the aforementioned laundry room, a tool room, and hopefully a living room/playroom/hangout area.

These pictures are from our first walk-through of the house back in March of 2008. We closed 15 days later. Renovated floors 1 and 2 from July 2008 to September 2009. Break's over.

There is currently a bathroom stall down there. See the plunger. Right there. Lots of houses we looked at were like that. Wonder why?

First thing to go is the wood paneling "walls". Second thing to go will probably be my sanity.

I'll update our progress every Monday. Unless I forget, and then maybe Tuesday or whenever I get around to it. Follow along with me.
